A working class view…

Australia 2005 : The tension that exists in this country today is not new. The "US" and "THEM" attitude has always been here. The "US" meaning anyone born in Australia of Australian born parents, and "THEM" meaning everyone else.

Todays Australian born Lebonese youths face the same problems that Australian born Greek and Italian youths experienced in the 1970’s. The biggest differences that exist between those days and now are Religion and War.

But thats another story to be talked about on another occasion. And remember that this is just my observation, and I would love to see some comments on this article from other readers about there views on the subject.

Take any young Australian born lebanese youth and the chances are most likely that :-

Both parents were born in Lebanon.

English is not the language of choice at home.

Lebanese food is prefired at home.

Lebanese newspapers, books and magazines are prefired to English
reading material.

The parents consider it there duty to continually remind there children
of there Lebanese heratige.

In other words the kids have had the Lebanese way of doing things rammed down there throats from child birth. Then the kids go off to school with there kebab sandwiches for lunch where everything around them is… Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi! Oi! Oi!. No wonder there confused.

The end result of all this is that the kids are torn between two cultures, and forced to decide which one they will follow. There decision is greatly influenced dont forget by there parents who are ramming there Lebanese heritage down ther throats.

And we haven’t even mentioned that taboo word… Religion!!!

This problem will only go away when the young Australian born lebanese youths of today start getting married to Australian born wives and produce Aussie children. Meaning Australian born kids with both parents born in Australia.

Because then those children will be dinky dye Aussies with Aussie parents who dont ram there grandparents lebanese heritage down there Aussie throats.

And I say all that with no dis-respect ment to any Lebanese who are proud of there background. I’m an Aussie but my family roots go back to England and Germany. My advice would be simple… LET GO!!!. Allow your kids to be Aussies, and stop ramming memories
of your homeland down there Aussie throats.
